Why save the wedding cake and serve the sheet cake?
jamiekm820 asked:
I guess Im a little confused. I am planning my wedding and I am learning that people usually have their wedding cake out for all to see, but they don’t actually serve that cake. They have a sheet cake in the back that gets sliced up and served. I understand the sheet cake is cheaper, but why save the WHOLE wedding cake?

my family has never done that, there are 2 or 3 different cakes, the brides cake and the grooms cake…
and everyone gets to decide which one they want…
i never heard of a sheet cake as a replacement

In some situations, the cake on display might not be large enough to serve all the guests. Therefore, they may order additional sheets cakes. The less layers on a cake makes it less expensive. So, this helps save money.
Also, many times, a four tier cake may only have two edible layers. The other layers are actually fake. This saves the couple money too. They can have their top tier for their 1st anniversary and then one additional layer to cut into, then they have the sheet cakes for serving.

People don’t save the whole wedding cake. They save the top tier to be eaten on the couples one year anniversary.
Sometime you can’t afford a cake and people will use a model that isn’t real and serve sheet cake. Sometimes only a section of the cake it real for the cake cutting and pictures.
The couple may have a small wedding cake that will just be served to the bridal party and parents, and the sheet cakes for the rest of the guests. Cost efficiency is a major thing when planning a wedding. This also keep the guests from complaining about who gets what cake, because usually the caterer takes the wedding cake to the back to cut up for guests serving.
I have never heard of a bride saving the entire wedding cake though. Check your sources, I think you might be slightly misinformed.
Our wedding, we have a four tiered wedding cake plus two sheets cakes. All but the top tier will be served at the wedding. We are being a little fun with our sheet cakes. We are actually doing cheesecake, so we are doing a build your own cheesecake dessert table. It will have toppings for everyone to choose from so they don’t have to eat the flavors of wedding cake we picked. Our tiered cake is also cheesecake and are chocolate and almond flavor, and not everybody likes flavored cheesecake. This gives people a chance to have more variety and it is fun and different than other weddings.
Good luck with your wedding

Ive seen this done several times, but like someone else mentioned, a lot of times they only save the small top tier and thaw it out for their 1 year anniversary.
I’ve seen the rest of the wedding cake served only to the wedding party/immediate family, and the sheet cake served to all the other guests.
Then i’ve seen the whole thing saved and taken home so that when the bride and groom have company after the honeymoon they can serve the wedding cake with a drink. I plan on serving all of mine except the top tier. The only other cake i will have is the groom’s cake.

Because the wedding cake is more expensive than the sheet cake.

They save only the top layer to have on their first anniversary. The rest is served at the reception.

Usually once the wedding cake is sliced the caterers take the whole cake to the back and slice it. Then serve it with the sheet cake if the wedding cake was not large enough to serve everyone. I usually recommend for clients to order the smallest wedding cake available and supplement it with sheet cakes.
The top is generally saved and frozen for the groom and bride to have on their 1st anniversary.
In the past 10 years or so there was a new trend of styrofoam form cakes, covered with real frosting and decorations. Usually there is a small section of real cake for the cake cutting ceremony. The cakes are left on display, because of course they are not real. This type of cake allows the bride and groom to have their large dream cake at a fraction of the cost of a real one.
So if you’ve seen a cake on display the whole reception, odds are it was a fake!

I cut up my wedding cake and we also had an extra sheet cake, so both were eaten.
The part of the wedding cake you DON’T cut up, however, is the top tier. That’s usually kept by the bride and groom and frozen to eat on their anniversary. I mean, obviously it’s up to you, but any respectable caterer or reception hall that cuts the cake for you, will box the top tier for you to keep.
But you’re more than welcome to cut up the wedding cake. In fact, I’ve never been to a wedding where they DIDN’T. The extra sheet cake is just to ensure theres enough cake, that way you don’t have to get a massive wedding cake (which can be quite expensive) and can instead just do a cheaper identical cheat cake that will taste the same, but doesn’t have to be put on display.
Or if you don’t want to do a sheet cake, you can do a grooms cake that reflects your husbands interests (since we all know weddings are mainly for the woman). Then guests can choose between wedding cake or grooms cake.

only the top layer is saved. The rest of the cake is actually foam so it’s cheaper. The sheet cake is then served. The top layer is usually preserved so that you can eat it on your 1 year anniversary.
